I Seem to Remember.......

Some of the Berkeley story sounds familiar, but I don't remember the part about Uncle Ken being arrested. Since the charges were dropped, the incident should not have gone against him, but we all know how that goes.

I also seem to remember that 1968 was a tumultuous year in a number of locations. My own sister was involved in the demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. I had skipped town by then, but I heard about it when I came back for a visit.

Also, an old friend of mine told me about his own experience with "Chicago's Finest" that same year. Glen used to do custom painting of cars for a living, you know the kind where it looks like the car is on fire, stuff like that. A friend of his owned a gas station, and let Glen use one of the bays to do his painting after hours. One night, Glen looked up to see the station surrounded by police cars, and heard a loud voice tell him to come out with his hands up, which he did. The police thought that Glen had broken into the station and didn't believe him when he told them he had permission. They all were having a hard time communicating anyway because a big fierce dog who lived in the station was barking and snarling and slobbering all over the window pane. Glen told them that he could quiet the dog if they would let him go back inside, which they did. As soon as he got back inside, Glen locked the door, sat down, put his feet up on a desk, and proceeded to pet the dog, who was obviously a friend of his. The cops then politely asked Glen to come back outside and give them some information for their report, called him "Sir" and everything. Did I mention that Glen was a tall young fellow with shoulder length hair and a beard to match?
