Better Than Nothing

"If you do the right thing in order to get the banana split, are you actually doing the right thing?  I am asking you, dawgs." - Uncle Ken

If you do the right thing to get a reward, that's not as good as doing the right thing for its own sake, but it's still better than not doing the right thing at all. Let's look at the converse. If you refrain from committing armed robbery because you don't want to go to jail, that's okay, but it's not as good as refraining from armed robbery out of the kindness of your heart. Any way you look at it, it's better to do the right thing than the wrong thing, regardless of your motivation.

Sexual conduct is a big part of any moral code, probably because it has the potential of disrupting the social order, but of course it's not the only part. I used it as an example of how a person might reject part of a system of morality without rejecting the whole program. Of course that doesn't always get you the girl, or the money, or the banana split, but you do what you have to do.
