Another blip

When Mr. Beagles mentioned that the ethnic breakdown of Cheboygan included Swedes, Poles, and the French a question occurred to me.  Why aren't there more (or any) thriving French communities and neighborhoods?  There was a time in North America where there was nothing but French explorers and trappers and yet there were very few established settlements, even though many American cities have French names.  Maybe they all became thoroughly assimilated or there is something about French culture that doesn't travel well.  When I think of Des Moines I don't think of a hotbed of French culture and tradition with residents lounging in cafes with their Gauloises and berets, in throes of existential angst.

Last year Uncle Ken provided a link to a video about Marina City which included a bright spot of green that is his condo balcony.  Are more residents following his lead or are such efforts frowned upon by the condo association, with complaints of morning glories encroaching upon the balconies above his?  I like to think that he is sticking a green thumb in the eye of authority.  I don't know his long term plans, but honeybees would be an interesting experiment with "Uncle Ken's Hi-Rise Honey" being a viable product.  Urbs in horto.
