Can't tell a player without a program

There's plenty of information online about old growth forests and it's nice to see that they ain't dead yet.  But I have a question for you south-siders:  did your families ever go to any local forest preserve for picnics or cookouts?  I think Dan Ryan Woods would be the closest for you guys but I'm not sure.  Anyhow, at least once a summer a few of the neighborhood families would get together and spend the day at Busse Woods in the northwest suburbs.  I don't know if these gatherings were spontaneous or well planned with permits; we always had access to one of those little pavilions and water pump.  It was great running around in the woods with the other kids, exploring and fooling around, and it didn't take long to forget you were near civilization and not stranded in the middle of a wilderness.  I think the trees absorb a lot of sound.

It's like that deeper in the city with another slice of wilderness.  East of the Outer Drive at Addison, right behind the totem pole, is the Jarvis Bird Sanctuary.  I don't know how big it is, maybe a couple of acres, and it's completely enclosed with chain link fence; no access is available.  It looks completely wild and overgrown and it's easy to forget that you are practically in the shadow of high rise apartment buildings.  It's quiet, dark, more than a little creepy and it's the only place in the city where I encounter mosquitoes.  It's nothing like old growth forest but it will do.

I'm not even going to try to keep track of all the Democrats jockeying for position in the 2020 presidential election.  There are almost twenty hats in the ring right now, bound to be more, but it wouldn't break my heart to see both Bernie and Biden drop out with advanced age being only part of the reason for them to bow out.  Bernie could be a very significant force in the Senate especially if he learns how to twist a few arms.  And Uncle Joe's time has passed; it doesn't help that he still can't keep his hands to himself.  Hop in the Trans Am and ride into the sunset, pal.
