Guilt is an emotion, something that runs through our brains, beyond our
control really.  When you're down in the dumps and some no account pal
of yours comes along and slaps you on the back and tells you to think
happy thoughts, you can never really do that.
So it is with guilt, it just comes on you, you can't help it.  You can't
control your emotions, but you can control your actions.  So is it a
reasonable guilt?  Is there something going on that is wrong and is
there something you can do about it?  If there is and you don't do
anything about it, then you are in the wrong.
That is an assumption, that we should do something to right wrongs.  I
suppose somebody could say, no, we don't have to.  I don't know how I
can respond to that, I can't build a logical case here.
Well I'll try here.  Man is a social animal, we rely on other people to
help us out if we get in a bind, and, except for Beagles, we believe we
ought to help other people out when they get into a bind.  This works
well for mankind in general.  If we never helped each other out, we
would not have the civilization that we have today.
I guess it would work out in the neighborhood around Beaglesonia.  If
your neighbor knew you would help him out if he fell into a well, he
would be more likely to help you out if you fell into a well, and you
would both be better off because the chances of either of you dying a
cold and clammy death at the bottom of a well would be decreased.
You could go fishing or hunting or chopping down wood on election day,
instead of traipsing to the polls and casting your vote.  You would be
better off, since you would have more fish in the freezer, more deer
meat in the larder, more wood stacked up neatly by the barn, so why do
you bother?
Well maybe you think you are helping yourself out a little.  There would
be less chance that that tax bill would pass, and that would be more
bucks in your pocket.  So when you vote are you thinking this would be
better for Beagles, or are you thinking this would be better for
everybody?
This zany libertarian, but hawkish and socially conservative, viewpoint
you espouse, do you think if it were enacted, if people whose opinions
align closely with yours were elected and made laws, the country would
be a better place for everybody, or a better place for Beagles and hang
everybody else?
