I guess I like Tip of the Mitt, but it sounds like that would encompass a
bigger area than the one I was referring to. You've never heard of the
New Madrid fault? The greatest earthquake this continent has known in
the time of the white man originated near the small town of New Madrid,
near the southern tip of Illinois in Missouri, in the early 1800's.
Church bells rang in Boston and the course of the Mississippi river was
changed.
I think we have established that you don't feel guilty. All those years
in Elsdon apparently have left no taint on you, whereas I, the Sunday
School dropout, appear to have taken up the Methodist way, well except
for the god part. But then it's liberal guilt, which is a little
different than churchy guilt. Churchy guilt inspires people to set up a
soup kitchen, liberal guilt inspires people to make the government do
something about it.
I'm going to guess that Iraq was better off with Saddam. They had
electricity for one, and I'm sure more people have died since Saddam
than with him, and they had some kind of stability. Probably Libya was
better off with Kaddafi, and probably those guys in Syria would have
been better off if they hadn't taken up arms against Assad. Seems like
Egypt is back where it was before, and maybe Tunisia is better off.
Overall that whole Arab Spring thing was a bust.
We don't have any problems with illegal immigrants here. They work hard
at crappy jobs and pay money into social security that they will never
see, but you and I will. They certainly do less crime than people who
are born here. I mean assume that years ago when you were young and
your daughter was just a kid, a big economic depression hit the US, a
huge depression where you couldn't get a job or feed your family. Throw
in some narcos killing almost randomly. And right across the straits
there was Canada, unaffected by the depression, everybody living high
off the hog, and you could bus tables there and make enough money to
feed your family? Wouldn't swimming the straits be the right thing to
do.
Why do you look on Reagan's amnesty program as a failure? Didn't we get
plenty of upstanding, hardworking, law abiding, citizens as a result?
The idea that that was what caused more to cross over is ludicrous
because they were doing it before Reagan made the deal and they have
been doing it the thirty years since with no subsequent promise of
amnesty. Amnesty or no amnesty they are coming. The only thing that
slows them down is an economic downturn for the US.
And of course the answer to people going back to where they came from is
us on a boat to Bohemia. Why is it up to us white guys, the most
recent immigrants to decide that the Indians, the original inhabitants
can stay? How mighty white of us. Maybe it should be up to the even
more recent immigrants, the Mexicans, to decide if we should stay or
not.
