I tried to create a proper link to that news article the other day, but I couldn't make it work. I assumed it was due to a glitch in the Blogger machine, which has happened before, but it never occurred to me that there was a problem with the link itself. That seems like the most likely reason since Uncle Ken couldn't even make it work by copying and pasting. I was not grinding any axes here, I just thought the story might be of interest since we had been discussing immigration.
Speaking of immigration, I looked up Ellis Island last night, and it turns out that it wasn't such a nice place after all. Although most of the immigrants were accepted, some were rejected for what would be considered arbitrary reasons today. It seems there was indeed some anti-immigrant sentiment in the country, which eventually manifested itself as the Immigration Act of 1924. Immigration laws have come and gone since then, and maybe it's time for another overhaul. That's not likely to happen any time soon, however, since half the people want to keep them out and the other half want to let them in. Even if Congress could achieve some kind of consensus, whatever they pass would surely piss off a lot of people.
Uncle Ken, let me get this straight: Are you saying that the U.S. is not overpopulated? Come to think of it, there hasn't been a lot of propaganda about it lately like there was back in the 60s and 70s. When I got my vasectomy in the early 70s, the government paid for it. You didn't have to be poor or anything, they were doing it for everybody. Call me "paranoid", but I wonder now if they were just trying to get the White people to limit their family size to make room in the country for more colored immigrants.

When I joined the army for three years instead of being drafted for two, I got to choose my assignment. I chose Airborne because it was a prerequisite for Special Forces, which was what you needed to get into Vietnam at the time. By the time I finished Basic Training, I no longer wanted to go Airborne. I had no problem with jumping out of planes, it was all the running I couldn't hack. I never knew that I sucked at running until I joined the army because I had never done a lot of it before. They told us that the Airborne guys did a lot more running than the Infantry. When I got to AIT, they offered us all the chance to opt out of our enlistment options and remain in the Infantry, which I did.
Nice knife, Old Dog. Is that a serrated blade I see? If so, how did you make that?
