What Augustine did was link Jesus's forgiveness with that apple (okay which wasn't really an apple, and by the way I don't think Eve had anything more to do with it than Adam did. At some point I did try to read the good book and since the garden story is right at the beginning I came came across that and I was surprised that it didn't mention Eve in any especial way. I think Eve got trashed later on in the strange way the bible sometimes has of envisioning women as evil temptresses that blameless men are the victims of). Even if you lead a sinless life you still can't get to heaven without Jesus because you are born, as were those before you, and those who will come after you, with that blot upon your soul. Augustine thought that part up.
The Anabaptists (present day Amish and others of that ilk) and the Baptists (present day American bible thumpers) may have some connection way back when, but they are pretty distinct these days.
What's the point system? Is that like karma?
That was another thing we whispered about in the basement at Elsdon Methodist. The Catholics would only let a prot marry one of their people if they agreed to raise the children Catholic. That didn't seem fair, shouldn't they have alternated or something? It seems like there was some Catholicism way back on my mother's side, When we visited my Grandmother's sister, Aunt Bess, in Berwyn she had a big painting of Jesus with that sacred heart thing popping out of His chest, which seemed to us to be the kind of thing that Catholics went for, but then I think she went in for seances too, so I don't know.
I have dim memories of being given the day off school to watch Ike get inaugurated, the dimness makes me think it was 52 rather than 56. I was wondering why a good dem like Daley would have let us out for a republican president and googling that, I discovered that he didn't become mayor until 1955. I would have been ten years old. I would have thought Daley had been mayor all my life.
I don't have much impression of the inauguration on our little black and white tv, but I am sure that is the only one I have ever watched. Weddings, graduations, funerals, whenever people have to dress up and stand here and then there, make speeches, blah, blah, blah, I have no interest.
Of course this one will be different. I can't imagine that Dumbo can get through the whole thing without insulting somebody, bragging about himself, and making up some story. But that''s not the noteworthy, he does that all the time.
You know I still have it in my mind to discuss that morality (not immortality) in religion thing, How about this thought experiment? A beggar is sitting on the corner and a Christian and an atheist walk by and they both give the guy a buck. The Christian is thinking this will get him one step closer to the pearly gates and the atheist he just feels bad for the guy. Are the two acts of equal goodness, or is one gooder than the other?
