Traveling Light in the '60s

If Rittenhouse had the sense of a snake he would have stayed home.  Going but not taking his AR-15 would have made more sense than taking it which resulted in two people being killed."

If Rittenhouse had gone into that riot unarmed, he might have been killed himself.  I think two bad guys getting killed is preferable to one good guy getting killed, but I don't expect Uncle Ken to agree with me on that.

When I took my guns to town back in '67, it was not my intention to go looking for trouble, but those were troublesome times and, being new to the area, I didn't know what to expect.  There was a lot of talk going around about the riots Down Below, and also a rumor that a contingent of Hell's Angels had experienced a real or imagined indignity in nearby Mackinaw City and had vowed to return to wreak vengeance upon the town.  If I had found myself in a dangerous situation, it would have taken me a minute or two to break out one of my guns and load it up, but I figured that would give me a better chance than not having it with me at all.

Besides, I was renting an old trailer on the edge of town, and I didn't know how long I was going to stay there.  I didn't have a lot of stuff in those days, and keeping my guns in the car meant I had one less thing to load up if I moved again.  My last move was from a rustic cabin on Long Lake, and it had taken me a total of 20 minutes to load up all my worldly goods, including a canoe that had to be carried uphill from the shore and strapped to the luggage carrier on the roof.
