I don't suppose you guys have yard signs in the big city because you don't have a lot of yards and everybody is a Democrat anyway, but yard signs are a big part of the political process here in God's Country. I had to go to the dentist today in Indian River, some 20 miles away. There are plenty of dentists right here in Cheboygan, but we started going to this guy when we lived in Indian River back in the 1970s, and he is still our dentist. He's been easing into retirement for some years now and only comes into the office a couple days a week to help out his daughter, who is in the process of taking over the practice. Along the way, I couldn't help but notice all the yard signs. I didn't count them, but the Trump signs clearly outnumbered the Hillary signs, and they were generally larger too. Speaking of yard signs, I heard tell that somebody in Cheboygan put out both a Trump sign and a Hillary sign and, in between them, a home made sign that says "We're Screwed!"
The Republicans have a clear majority in this part of the state, but it doesn't do us any good because most of Michigan's population lives in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula and they mostly vote Democrat. Our congressional district covers the whole Upper Peninsula and a good part of the northern Lower. The U.P used to mostly vote Democrat, but they have been drifting to the right the last few elections and we have managed to elect a Republican congressman by a narrow margin for the last three terms. He has declined to run this time, and it's been a tight race for his successor. For this reason I have decided to vote for the Republican candidate, even though I am not crazy about him, because we are going to need all the Republicans in congress that we can get to obstruct Hillary's agenda. I will be voting Libertarian for president and Republican for everything else. I don't know how many other Republican voters will jump ship over Trump but, judging by the signs, not many.
I have been assuming all along that Hillary will win, but maybe not. The latest polls seem to indicate that Michigan might be a swing state this time and, in the event of a close electoral count, our 16 votes could make the difference. By the way, I read in the paper that Sara Palin was in town the other day stumping for Trump. Imagine that, Sara Palin right here in Cheboygan, and I didn't hear about it until she was long gone. Too bad, it would have been impressive to tell my grand children some day that I shook Sara Palin's hand, except that my only grandchild is all growed up already, and she's a Bernie Democrat who has been threatening to vote Green Party since he lost the nomination. I don't know what's wrong with kids nowadays.
