We're flogging a dead horse with this abortion thing. The only reason I brought it up was that it was passed the same way they are going to pass this gay marriage thing. First we vote it down, then the Supreme Court nullifies our vote and forces it upon us. You're right, I can't do anything about it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I got to thinking about that Indian thing today. I assume you looked up the demographics of the City of Cheboygan, where less than 20% of the residents of Cheboygan County live. Then there's Emmet County right next door. They have more people than we do, and I'm sure that they have a higher percentage of Indians. When the Indian fishing controversy was going on, it seemed like half the people in the paper mill were claiming to be Indians. Well, maybe it wasn't half, but it seemed like it was because they were mouthing off about it so much. Many of these new found Indians were probably from rural Cheboygan and Emmet counties, so that's why I was surprised to hear that Cheboygan had only 4 or 5 % Indians. Be that as it may, nobody cares about it anymore, so I guess it's another dead horse.
I didn't say that the Cheboygan area had a racially balanced population, I just said that we have all kinds of people here, and that most of them mind their own business and don't bother anybody. Our 90% White population is pretty diverse in and of itself. We have people of French, English, Polish, Swedish, and at least one of Czech ancestry. (There used to be two of us, but one of them died.) Then there's all those Indians that you don't even know are Indians unless they tell you. We have Catholics and Protestants (both mainstream and holy roller types), and a lot of people who will tell you they believe in God but haven't been inside a church in years. I'm not aware of any Jews or Muslims but, if you cross over into Emmet County again, you will find some Wiccans and a substantial congregation of Indians who have reverted back to their traditional indigenous religious practices, complete with sacred drums and peace pipes. (I'm not making this up.)
I guess I shouldn't complain about Whites being marginalized. After all, our ancestors did it to the other races for centuries, and it's only fair that we get our turn. As for government representation, we have a Black president. Actually he's only half Black but, of course, the White half doesn't count. I understand that Blacks are disproportionately represented in the prison population, but that's because they commit a disproportionate number of the crimes. I don't know why there are so few Black rich people. They are no longer being held back by law, and any corporate executive who denied one of them a promotion would certainly have some 'splainin' to do. The schools have been integrated for a long time, and most universities actively recruit Blacks and other minorities in the interest of "diversity". (They used to call it "quotas" but, for some reason, the Supreme Court made them change it to "diversity".)
There was something about Rand Paul on the news recently. I understand that he has officially announced that he's going to run for president. Good for him! They said that he is a more savvy politician than his father, and is already kissing up to the "moderate" (RINO) Republicans, since he already has the Tea Party types in his pocket. If he can manage to bring them both under the same tent, it would seem to indicate that he might be sufficiently devious to actually have a chance of winning this thing. One can only hope.

It's not true that if you are part white and part something else the gov considers you the not white part. The gov considers you whatever you say you are. Oh, here we have Rand Paul announcing he is running. He's probably the closest thing you have to a hero who is running for prez. Maybe we can talk about him.

Running Late Again
I was going to read the link you gave me yesterday, I really was, but, for some reason, it doesn't work. Usually, when you type in a URL, it will come up blue and automatically become a link, but this one didn't. I suppose I could type it in manually, but it's really long, and I'm running late again tonight. To speed things up, I will grant you that Michigan probably has passed some laws over the years with the intent of inconveniencing the abortion people, as well they should. Contrary to your assertion that most people were in favor of legalizing abortion, the voters of Michigan defeated a ballot proposal to that effect by more than a two to one margin only a few months before the Supreme Court mandated that we had to allow it anyway. That's why I said that they shoved it down our throats. Although I personally don't like the idea of abortion, and was one of the people who voted against it, what I really don't like is the way the Supreme Court forced it on the people of Michigan against their will. Nevertheless, like I said, they still can't make a girl have an abortion if she doesn't want one, at least not yet.
It seems to me that freedom of speech also implies the freedom to not listen if I don't want to. I don't know what the Supreme Court would say about that but, as any kid in school could tell you, they would have a had time enforcing a law that requires people to listen and pay attention to something against their will. In Orwell's novel "1984" they had TV sets in every home and public place that couldn't be turned off, but they don't have anything like that in the real world, at least not yet.
The numbers you got from Wiki about the racial make up of Cheboygan seem a little off to me. I would have guessed less Blacks and way more Native Americans. Last I heard, there were no Black families living permanently in Cheboygan. When I was driving school busses, there were a few Black kids who had been adopted by White parents, but that was over 10 years ago and there may be more of them by now. Come to think of it, some of those kids have grown up by now and had kids of their own, so there might be a few Black or mixed race families around. We have those Jamaicans that are hired by local businesses under some government program, but they are seasonal workers who return to Jamaica after their employment runs out. Now and then you might see a Black tourist or two in the summer, but they are just passing through on their way to somewhere else.
Wiki probably got their numbers from the U.S Census, where people are asked to self identify their race, which might account for some of the confusion, especially with the Native Americans. I'm sure I told you before about how, back in the 80s, a court ruling gave certain special hunting and fishing privileges to Native American Indians. This caused a whole lot of people of French ancestry to be magically transformed into Indians. Of course, most of them were only part Indian, but government policy dictates that, if you're part anything and part White, the White part doesn't count. The furor over this issue has long since died down, so maybe many of those Indians have transformed themselves back into Frenchmen again by now. I understand that there was a time in history when Frenchmen weren't considered White, but that was a long time ago and nobody remembers it anymore. I wouldn't know about it myself if I hadn't stumbled across it in a book that I was reading.
When I was a card carrying Libertarian, there were some party members who believed that the census shouldn't make an accounting of race at all. They suggested that we all self identify our race as "human" in a symbolic act of protest. I considered it, but decided that they would just send somebody around to follow up on it, which would waste more of our tax money and my time, so I didn't do it. Besides, I think that all us White people should stand up and be counted. All the others do it and, if we don't, we might be marginalized even more than we are being now.

I have to agree with you that Gage Park was quite provincial. We had all those Irish and Polish and Italians and Greeks, but everybody was white, and since the housing was the same for miles in any direction, everybody was the same economic class. I have never been to Cheboygan. Let's go to the wiki:

Live and Let Live
I'll check out that link tomorrow. It's kind of late and I'm still reeling from that deer video you sent me. I don't think anybody has ever tried to open an abortion clinic around here, which is probably why I never heard about it.
The reason I brought it up in the first place was to draw a parallel with the gay wedding thing. Just as the Supreme Court forced the abortion law down our throats, but they can't make a girl have one if she doesn't want to, or make a doctor perform one if he doesn't want to, they shouldn't be able to force someone to participate in a gay wedding if they don't want to after they have forced that one down our throats. They have created the right to have an abortion, but they haven't made it compulsory to have one or perform one, at least not yet.
My hypothetical wife was raised Catholic, but she married me in a Protestant church. The local Catholic priest forbade her parents to attend the wedding. They might have gone regardless, but we didn't want to put them in the position of having to make that decision. We didn't want a big fancy wedding anyway, so we had a small ceremony in the church, and then we took the folks out to dinner afterwards. A Catholic should not be forced to attend a Protestant wedding, and a Protestant shouldn't be forced to attend a Catholic wedding. So why should a straight person be forced to attend a gay wedding, or vice versa?
I'm not saying that gays, Blacks, or whoever should be mistreated and abused like they were in the past. I just don't like the way some of them carry on like we should kiss their asses because they are Black, gay, or whatever. I don't expect people to kiss my ass because I'm White, Czech, straight, or whatever. We are all equal under the law, or should be by now, but that doesn't mean I have to like you or you have to like me.
Cheboygan isn't a particularly backward town, in fact the South Side neighborhood we grew up in was more provincial. We've got all kinds of people around here, and most of them mind their own business and don't bother anybody else. What's wrong with that?

That last paragraph, I think you just put that in to get a rise out of me. Strange choice of words that this gay thing is becoming a pain in the ass. Do I see a Freudian slip there? And then I notice that while on the first round they are Blacks, Hispanics, and gays, but by the second round they have become Negroes and homos, and our latino buddies have kind of dropped out of the mix. Perhaps you are a fan of Sabado Gigante and like seeing the toothy girls in their skimpy costumes singing and dancing.
Is that what you see them doing, the gays, hispanics, and blacks, singing and dancing? But they are pretty good singers and dancers unlike us club footed, off key, dull and boring white folks. But I expect, and by the way they are not on tv all the time, and I think that what you mean by all the time is at all, you'd just as soon never see them because probably what pisses you off is that they are complaining, whining about not having the rights of or being persecuted more than straight white people.

These rants are a dime a dozen and it doesn't suit a person of my sophistication to waste time refuting them.

Another Myth Trashed
It occurred to me that I might have gotten the saltpeter story mixed up with some information that I thought I knew about Spanish fly, so I looked that up too. (How did we ever settle anything before Wikipedia?)
Spanish fly is the flip side of saltpeter, it supposedly is or was used to stimulate breeding behavior in livestock. Stories have been told about some smart aleck putting Spanish Fly in the punch bowl and turning his senior prom into a sex orgy, but such stories are of dubious authenticity and will not be repeated here. My old friend Orin Bolin, who was a real farmer, told me that he once tried it on a boar hog who was reluctant to do his duty, but all it made the stupid hog do was masturbate. Orin also told me that Spanish fly is not really an aphrodisiac, it's an irritant, and is considered too dangerous to be used on humans. This correlates with what I just learned on Wiki, except that Wiki doesn't mention the stuff as being commonly used on livestock.
Spanish fly doesn't really come from flies, but at least they got the "Spanish" part right. They make it from grinding up certain types of beetles that live in Spain. Ironically, the one beetle species that is actually named "Spanish fly" is not one of those commonly used to produce the product. The active ingredient is cantharidin, a toxic substance that the beetles produce to coat their eggs so other bugs won't eat them. This stuff is toxic enough that it has been historically used to poison people as often as it has been used as an aphrodisiac. I suppose that, if taken in sufficiently small doses, it might not do you any harm, but it certainly won't do you any good either. Here's what Wiki has to say about that:
"As it passes through the body, cantharidin irritates the genitals resulting in increased blood flow that can mimic the engorgement that occurs with sexual excitement.[3] For this reason, various preparations of desiccated Spanish flies have been used as some of the world's oldest alleged aphrodisiacs, with a reputation dating back to the early western Mediterranean classical civilizations. The ease of toxic overdose makes this highly dangerous, so the sale of such products as Spanish fly has been made illegal in most countries."
I am not aware that our RINO governor or his cronies in the Michigan legislature have done anything to discourage abortion clinics but, if they have, it seems that it would apply to the whole state, not just the northern part. I still think that the reason we don't have any abortion clinics near by is that there isn't sufficient demand to make them profitable. Individual doctors probably refrain from doing abortions because of liability issues and/or because they can make more money doing other procedures.
A girl can't even have a baby in this town any more either. Our local hospital went bankrupt and was bought out by a conglomerate outfit who now uses it only as an outpatient clinic. If you need to be kept overnight, they ship you off to their other facility in Petoskey, some 40 miles away. When I had my bleeding ulcer in 2008, a three mile ambulance ride cost me $700, and I'm sure the price of a ride to Petoskey must be a whole lot higher than that.
This whole gay thing has become a pain in the ass, I wish they would go back into the closet where they belong. Every time you turn on the TV, all you see are Blacks, Hispanics and gays. Sometimes, when I get discouraged about it, I think that it's too late to save this country. Instead of being the land of the free and the home of the brave, it has become the land of the Negroes and the home of the homos. Funny though, when I go out and about in the real world, I don't see anything like that. We have a few of those kinds of people around, but they seem to mind their own business. They don't bother anybody, and nobody bothers them. Why can't the rest of the world be like Cheboygan?

My old friend Orin Bolin, who was a real farmer, told me that he once tried it on a boar hog who was reluctant to do his duty, but all it made the stupid hog do was masturbate.
