"The Tea Party movement was started by Republican Congressman Dr. Ron Paul in 2007.[11][12][13] [14][15] [16][17] [18]The movement grew exponentially following Barack Obama's first presidential inauguration (in January 2009) when his administration announced plans to give bailouts[19] to bankrupt homeowners." - From the Wikipedia article "Tea Part movement".
I looked this up because I wasn't all that sure of it myself. All I knew was that I had never heard of the Tea Party until shortly after Obama was elected to his first term. It's a long article but, if you just read the summary at the beginning, you can get a pretty good idea of what the Tea Party is all about. As I had previously read somewhere, there is no one Tea Party organization, it's a collection of loosely affiliated groups that more or less share a common agenda. Wiki describes it as a "grass roots movement", which is consistent with what I had read about it in the past. I was surprised to read, however, that about 10% of Americans consider themselves to be Tea Partiers. I suppose that includes sympathizers and fellow travelers as well as card carrying members, but that still seems like a lot of people in this fragmented culture of ours.
I noticed that Obama announced plans to bail out bankrupt homeowners, which is the way I remember the TARP deal as originally being sold to the public. Of course they did nothing of the sort, they bailed out the banks and left the homeowners twisting in the wind. I was against TARP as I am against all bailouts on general principles, but I said at the time that, if they were going to have a bailout, they should have bailed out the homeowners like they had originally promised. The banks would have ended up with the money anyway, so there would have had two bailouts for the price of one. Be that as it may, I don't suppose it would have mattered who was elected president in 2008, since both McCain and Bush II also spoke in favor of some kind of bailout.
I guess I got a little carried away with my xenophobic rant in my last post. That's what happens when I watch too much news on television. I should probably stick to the weather and stock market reports.
Of course it's unlikely that Beaglesonia will be over run by undesirable aliens any time soon, which is another good reason to live here. Terrorists, both Islamic and otherwise, usually target mass gatherings of people so as to maximize civilian casualties, which is another good reason to avoid mass gatherings of people. All things considered, I am as safe here as anybody can reasonably expect to be. I wish I could say the same for you. Have you bought that fast boat yet?
Illegal immigration, especially from Mexico, has been going on for a long time, and both parties are to blame for that. The Republicans want them for cheap labor, and the Democrats want them for cheap votes. It would be difficult to shut the door now, after it has been blocked open for so long, but there seems to be a growing demand that we do just that. I think that explains Trump's popular appeal, he is saying what a lot of people are thinking. Too bad a more rational candidate doesn't come out with a more rational plan to address the issue. Well, maybe someone has, but I haven't heard of it. Have you? No, amnesty is not a rational plan, it will just encourage more illegal immigration.
According to Wiki, the Immigration Act of 1965 is what changed the legal immigration demographics from European to Asian and Hispanic. I understand that the old quota system that was passed in 1920 was biased towards White people, and I can see why the liberal establishment of the 60s wanted to correct that, but hasn't the pendulum swung far enough the other way by now? You know, the only thing I've got against Asians, which includes Middle Easterners, and Hispanics is that there are so darn many of them. Come to think of it, that's what I've got against the whole human race, so maybe I'm not so prejudiced after all. I guess it wouldn't bother me so much if I was sure they all would stay in the big cities. They probably will, but I wish I could be more sure of that.

ridding this country of Mexicans, Muslims, or anybody else
Where is the tea party in this election? Trump is not their man since
he has in his previous, pre-Republican life voiced some pretty
mainstream ideas. Cruz would seem to be one, although he is cozying up
real close to the evangelicals. I never understood the
libertarian/bible beating coalition that made up the tea party. It
would seem that either side was made up of everything the other side
stood against, but then the unifying force of the tea party is what they
are against, so maybe it doesn't matter that both sides were so
dissimilar. Rubio is considered an establishment guy, I guess because
he is a bit, er, flexible, and the establishment guys want to have
somebody they can cozy up to, and they've largely given up on Jeb. I
hear Rand Paul barely made it onto the stage for the upcoming debate.
Isn't he too dovish for the tea partiers though?
You'll have to walk me through how Obama fueled the tea party. Are you telling me that if the big girl had won the election there wouldn't have been a tea party? I think we need to follow the money. I think it was some guy who cornered the market on those goofy hats and then had to figure out where he could find some idiots to wear them.
So I think what you are saying was that if it could be done you would like to rid the country of what you call, in your indelicate choice of words, undesirables? So who are they? Your earlier reference was to ridding this country of Mexicans, Muslims, or anybody else which really is not very specific, especially the anybody else part, but apparently they have been let into the country by let me guess, Obama?
So who are these undesirables? All immigrants, illegal immigrants, all muslims, just terrorist muslims, and anybody else is just people you don't like? And undesirable to who? Well pretty much everybody else is undesirable to you. I expect your vision for America is everybody living on some freehold marching around with their bazillion guns because anytime anybody whispers 'gun control' they are out to the gun store like granny out to the gambling boat.
So I thought you were maybe easing up on the undesirables when you said they're here now, but then stocking up on ammunition and hiding in the swamp arises. Do you think those immigrants made the hard trek to America to come to your swamp and hang out with you in the deer blind? Isn't hiding out in the swamp and stocking up on ammo what you are already doing? Isn't this what you see as your ideal vision for America, everybody hanging out in their own swamp while the guys that make guns, many of them in foreign countries I believe, get filthy rich? Maybe this is just more of that Beagles humor, but it appears to be a rather hostile humor.
What about if instead of the Whole Foods clerks whispering bang when your venison order is ready, they would merely stand in front of you for about thirty seconds, and if you were asleep then it would be no venison for you? How about if they wore those antlers that are so popular this season?

Troubled Times
I agree that all times are troubled times, maybe not all over, but there is always trouble going on someplace. What makes it seem worse nowadays is that we are made instantly aware of any trouble that happens anywhere, so we feel closer to it than we used to.
I agree that the Tea Party paved the way for the rise of Trump, although I don't know if either Trump or the Tea Party have publically endorsed each other. On the other hand, the Tea Party itself would probably not have been organized if Obama hadn't been elected president. We can also thank Obama for the fact that more people own guns in this country than ever before. I saw on the Bloomberg Channel the other day that Smith & Wesson stock goes up every time Obama makes a speech about gun control.
I remember Ross Perot. He was stone crazy but he got over 19% of the vote. Imagine what would happen if a rational regular guy had that kind of influence. You don't have to be rich to run for president, but it certainly helps. If you're as rich as Perot or Trump you don't have to kiss up to a bunch of people to raise campaign funds because money follows money. Being rich doesn't necessarily make you a bad guy, but it doesn't necessarily make you a good guy either. What this country needs is a good, rich, smart, brave, conservative regular guy who has the ability and the ambition to run for president, get elected, and then do a good job once he gets the job.
My rant about the wall and the camps was a little tongue in cheek, but not much. I was trying to point out that ridding this country of Mexicans, Muslims, or anybody else would be a lot more difficult than Trump supposes. I'm sure his message is attractive to a lot of people. I might go for it myself if I thought he would really do it if elected, or if it would even work if he tried. He is just telling people what they want to hear, which is what politicians do. Those undesirables should never have been allowed into the country in the first place, but they're here now, so the best we can do is stock up on ammunition and hide in the swamp.
The fishing in your neighborhood is probably as good as it is in mine. When I left Chicago that water was so polluted that only carp could live in it, but I understand it has been cleaned up over the years. Hunting is a different story. Shopping is not hunting. As I get older, hunting and fishing seems to be getting less important than it once was, but elbow room is more important than ever. I would never be happy living in crowded conditions like you do. I suppose a guy could get used to it, but I don't want to.

Trump rising and downtown hunting
That is a question whether Trump is a product of these times. A lot of
times some story about a current phenomena will start with, in these troubled times, or sometimes a story about something that happened in the past will begin with in those troubled times.
My point is that all times are troubled. Remember we used to have the
Russkies staring at us across the sea bristling with atomic weapons and
their leaders were commonly portrayed as some kind of madmen. Before
that we had the damn Nazis running roughshod over Europe while the
Japanese were carving up Asia, then we had the civil war, and then those
damn redcoats wanting us to buy their crappy tea and pay a tax on it.
I rather think we could have had Trump at anytime. Remember Ross Perot? Look at that goofy looking guy with his gobblydegook charts, who would have believed he had ever had a shot? I think his main claim to fame was that he was a rich guy. I don't remember if he every toyed with either party, he was a third party guy all the way.
Much as your ilk blames Obama for everything, I am going to blame the tea party for making possible the rise of Trump. First of all it got people used to listening to outrageous things from the candidates and not being challenged (here the RINOs have to accept some blame, why did they ever invite those vipers into their party?), and that strident rage against all politicians. Anybody who held an office was bad, the fact that you had never held an office before instead of making you inexperienced, made you as pure as the driven snow.
I think the first thing they teach you in jihadi school is that if you are sneaking into the United States and they are not allowing muslims in, tell them you are not one. I'm just going to assume your talk of internment camps and slave labor and a wall along all our borders is some extended joke.
There is a river maybe a hundred feet from my downtown tower and you often see people fishing in it. There is a Whole Foods within a quarter mile. You wouldn't be able to take Old Betsy there, but some kind of fancy walking stick would be fine. They have a little area there where people can eat the food they buy there. I'm sure nobody would mind if you napped there. And then you can have it arranged that at some random point (to keep up the thrill of the hunt) one of employees could whisper boom loudly into your ear and hand you a nicely wrapped hunk of venison. You wouldn't have to do that nasty stuff with the deer hanging upside down and hacking away at it, and everytime you went hunting you would come back successful.

Regular Guys
I doubt that most regular guys have the kind of money that Trump has but, then again, neither do most irregular guys. Nevertheless, I see your point. Maybe people are just getting fed up with politicians, although that has happened before and, after they get it out of their system, they end up putting the politicians back in office. Remember Jesse Ventura the wrestler? He was a big hit, but only for one term. Cheboygan elected a regular guy for mayor once, but also for only one term. The problem with regular guys is that they can't get anything done because the politicians won't cooperate with them. We would have to elect all regular guys and get rid of the politicians altogether, but I don't think there are enough regular guys out there who are willing to put forth the necessary effort to get elected and stay elected. If they wanted the job that bad, they would already be politicians.
I doubt that most Muslims would ever deny that they are Muslims, even unto death, but I don't think we can ban Muslims because they are Muslims. What we could do is ban immigrants from certain countries, that has been done at least once that I know of with the Chinese. Getting rid of the ones that are already here would be more difficult. Even if we could round them all up and deport them, they would just turn around and sneak back in like the Mexicans have been doing since forever. Well, it would be harder to sneak in from Syria than it is to sneak in from Mexico, but they could always go to Mexico first, or Canada for that matter, and sneak into the U.S. from there. It might be better to just round them up and put them into internment camps like they did with the Japanese back in W.W. II. Then we would have to feed them, but we might be able to get some work out of them too. Oh, that's right, there isn't enough work in this country for our own people as it is. Trump's Wall has a nice ring to it, but we would also need to fortify the Canadian border, the East Coast, the West Coast, the Gulf Coast, the Alaskan Coast, and the Hawaiian Islands. I doubt that even Trump has enough money to do all that. Also, a wall isn't much good if you don't post guards on it, Hadrian the Roman proved that.
The estimate I got on the truck repairs was $777, which is a lot of money to put into an 11 year old vehicle. If I had known this was going to happen I might have traded it in before I put over $500 worth of new tires on it a couple months ago. Still, it starts good and runs good, at least for now. I only have 31,000 miles on it because I don't go anywhere much anymore. Cars don't rust like they used to, but this might be the first vehicle I ever owned that rots out before it wears out.
If I lived in a downtown tower like you do, I would still need a reliable vehicle to drive out into the country, and probably pay for the privilege of parking it somewhere in between trips. As it is, all I need to do is step out the door to be in the country. I don't need my truck to go hunting, but I do need it to go fishing because I would never be able to pull that boat trailer three miles to the launch ramp without it. The first boat I ever owned was a canoe, and I could easily carry it a quarter mile or so but, even in those days, three miles would have been a stretch. Nowadays it takes me a half hour to walk the quarter mile to my deer blind, and then I have to rest up four hours for the trip back home. I'm not complaining, you understand, it could be worse. A lot of people my age are dead.

Trump and transgender and drinking beer in your bare feet
Trump is what you see is what you get. He believes he is the greatest
man that ever walked the earth, so he believes that everything he says
is great. Anytime one of his simpleton ideas pops into his great mind
he speaks it and he is not surprised that his polls rise.
I don't know if you've watched any of the debates (I have watched all three and this fourth one is on the fifteenth, the same day as our condo Christmas party which is full of food and beer and people, and they will have a tv that will be showing the republican debates and I'll probably be watching it), but there is a difference between them right away. The rest of them are politicians and you can see where they have their talking points stored just behind their ears and whenever they speak they are listening to themselves and thinking what effect this will have on the other candidates and the voters.
Trump is like me at the Ten Cat maybe half way through the fourth pale ale, I say whatever pops into my mind and I am pretty confident that what I am saying is pretty smart, I am a regular guy. People distrust politicians (even the ones they like), but they like regular guys, and Trump looks like a regular guy at those debates.
This banning muslims thing, not only is it against everything this country stands for, but it is against the constitution and there is no way such a law could be enacted, and even if were how do you define who is a muslim, how do you check for it, what if the guy has just lost his religion? And the first thing a jihadi will do is deny that he is a muslim.
This wall, this deportation, even if you get elected how are you going to do it? Trump's answer: management. He knows how to get things done, he's a rich guy, rich guys know how to do anything.
Of course it's great for Hillary, of course I love it. It's playing with fire a little bit, what if he actually ended up as president? But I have to tell you it doesn't seem much worse than having Cruz for president. The best of all possible worlds is Trump as a third party. And that's another dilemma of the republicans. Normally they would all gang up on the front runner and try to drag him down, but they don't dare try that with Trump because he could get his feelings (hah) hurt and run on his own. No doubt about it, Trump is fucking the Grand Old Party.
I'm a little behind the liberal curve on all this transgender stuff. I'm right in step with all the gay rights stuff. If you want to have the operation I'm not going to stand in your way, though I will tend to think you are what your chromosomes say you are, but you can dress how you want and marry whoever you want and whatever, but maybe just, and I am embarrassed to be using that Beaglesonian phrase, don't make such a spectacle of yourself. As for that guy in Ann Landers (I admit I read it to, just a chance to shake my head and say what idiots before I dive into the comics), I guess it turned out that he was not only a woman, but he was a lesbian, as many women are. Well who am I to judge. Oh wait in your example it was a woman who discovered that not only was she a man but that she was a gay man, whatever, again can't they just do this stuff and not be so loud about it?
Six hours work on a truck, isn't that going to cost a fortune? Wouldn't you rather live in a nice tower in the middle of the city where if you ran low on beer you could just take an elevator down to the little store on ground level, and if your shoestrings are broken you could do it barefoot?

Crazy Like a Fox
I see that Donald Trump went off the deep end again. Was he ever on the shallow end? Now he wants to ban all Muslims from the country. According to the polls, lots of people agree with him, a majority of the Republicans and even some of the Democrats. The establishment Republicans, and even some of the fringe candidates, are having fits about it, but nobody cares what they say anymore, it's all about Trump. Every time he drops a bomb like this he gets tons of free publicity, insuring that the spotlight remains on him, leaving the other candidates groping around in the shadows. Some famous person once said that there is no such thing as bad publicity, anything that puts your name on people's lips is good for your career. This seems especially true when the field is so crowded with competitors who are largely unknown to the general public. Ask anybody off the street how many of the Republican candidates they can name, and I bet that Trump is the first one that comes to most of them.
I still haven't discounted the possibility that the only reason Trump is running is to insure that Hilary gets elected. I don't know why he would want that to happen, maybe he's a closet liberal at heart. Some rich people are you know. If he gets the nomination, it will rend the Republican party asunder and, if he doesn't get the nomination, he might run on a third party and split the Republican vote. Either way, Hilary gets elected. Well, why not? We've had a handicapped president, a Catholic president, and a Black president, so why not a woman president? After that we can have a Hispanic president, a Muslim president, a gay president, a transgender president, an Eskimo president, the possibilities are endless.
Another item for the "Every time you think you've seen it all, you find out that you ain't seen nothing yet" department: So this lady wrote to Ann Landers (I don't know why I read that crap, I suppose because it's on the comics page in our paper.) Anyway, this lady wrote in to brag about her son, who used to be her daughter before he had this sex change operation. The lady was so proud that her son overcame all those obstacles to become the person he was always meant to be. Apparently changing genders is no walk in the park. She says that it was all worth it because now her son is happily married to another man. (I am not making this up!) So answer me this if you can: If this guy wanted to marry another man, why didn't he do that when he was still a woman? Wouldn't that have saved everybody concerned a lot of trouble? I think my hypothetical wife is right, we did too much weird stuff in the 60s, and now each generation has to go to farther extremes to top us. It's our generation's fault, we set the bar too high.
The guy called about my truck today. The parts came in, they will start the work tomorrow, and they should be done by Friday. Friday? Well it's a six hour job and you never know what problems might be encountered along the way, so he didn't want to promise that it would be done tomorrow.
I didn't go hunting today because I didn't feel so good this morning, so I slept most of the day away. It was a dark and rainy day, good sleeping weather. It's supposed to be more of the same tomorrow, so I don't know if I'll make it out there or not. That's how it is when you get old, it takes you longer to rest up that it took you to get tired.
